Commentary
The verse is joined to what precedes it by wa-, "and", and it commands with the l- of command at its head: wal-yakhsha, "let them feel inward fear". A command with this l- directs the act at absent persons known by their description, so those commanded are "those who, were they to leave...", that is, everyone of whom it is true that he has offspring he may leave behind. Khashya is from kh-sh-y, a fear that penetrates to the inside and spreads through it until it fills it, an effect in the self that runs through it before it shows in action. The verse asks for this inward fear first, and then shows its source in what follows.
"Were they to leave" (law tarakū) opens a scene that has not yet happened: that the one addressed goes and leaves weak offspring behind him. The leaving here is from the root that came in the verse on shares, "of what the two parents and the nearest kin have left": what is left there is property, what is left here is offspring, and the verb is the same. Min khalfihim, "behind them", is from kh-l-f, the side that the one who departs leaves behind him, which remains empty of him; dhurriyya, offspring, is from dh-r-r, small ones scattered from a single origin; and ḍiʿāf, weak, the plural of ḍaʿīf, is from ḍ-ʿ-f, that in whose cohesion a split has opened, so that it cannot stand by itself.
The answer to law is "would fear for them"; khawf is from kh-w-f, an emptiness that extends through its bearer and scatters his resolve, and ʿalayhim, "for them", makes this fear fall on the offspring and hang on their fate. The verse thus uses two roots, an inward fear asked for now and a fear imagined in a scene that has not happened, and it makes the imagined fear for one's own offspring the measure of the inward fear asked for concerning the offspring of others, the orphans around whom these verses turn from their start. The Book has a close image of a man grown old whose weak offspring depend on what he holds: ﴿وَأَصَابَهُ الْكِبَرُ وَلَهُ ذُرِّيَّةٌ ضُعَفَاءُ﴾, "old age has struck him and he has weak offspring".
Then fa- brings the consequence: "let them guard themselves before Allah", so the inward fear that has penetrated within yields a guard that a person takes up for himself before Allah. Taqwā is from w-q-y, a screen that surrounds the self and keeps from it what would harm it, and the screen here stands between the one addressed and doing to the orphans of others what he fears for his own offspring, so the guarding keeps both him and the weak ones.
The verse closes on speech, as the verses on the sufahāʾ and on the division closed, and the description has changed: there "a word that is recognized", here "a word that hits the mark". Sadīd is from s-d-d, a root that turns on sealing a gap until it is closed; from it come sidād, what a breach is stopped with, and saddada al-sahm, he straightened the arrow until it hit the target. A sadīd word is one that strikes the place of what is right and seals the breach through which harm might reach the weak.
The recognized word in the verses on the sufahāʾ and on the division is speech directed at the one in need himself, who knows it to be good; the sadīd word in this verse is speech measured by its aim, and its setting is left open in the verse: it holds for every word spoken concerning weak offspring, in the keeping of property, the division, and whatever else has come before. The verse thus begins with an inward fear, passes through a guard before Allah, and ends with a word that goes out firm, hitting the mark and sealing the gap.
The verse asks for inward fear from everyone of whom it is true that he may leave weak offspring behind him, khashya, from kh-sh-y, being a fear that penetrates and spreads within, and it draws this fear from an imagined scene that law opens: offspring, from dh-r-r, young ones scattered from their origin, weak, from ḍ-ʿ-f, their cohesion split, left behind one who departs and fears for them. The verb of leaving by which property passed in the verse on shares returns and falls on the offspring themselves, so a person's fear for his own young becomes the measure of his inward fear concerning the young of others. The verse then turns this fear into a guard before Allah and closes on a sadīd word, from s-d-d, that hits what is right and seals the breach through which harm reaches the weak.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read as addressed to those who attend a dying man and advise him to bequeath his property away from his heirs until he wrongs his children: they are told to fear for his offspring what they would fear for their own, and to say to him a sound word that keeps the right of his heirs. Others apply it to the guardians of orphans: that they treat the orphans as they would wish their own children to be treated after them.
A reading that identifies those addressed, at the bedside where a bequest is made or in the guardianship of orphans.
A root-reading
Yakhsha (root kh-sh-y): a fear that penetrates and spreads within. Khalfihim (root kh-l-f): a side left empty after the one who goes. Dhurriyya (root dh-r-r): fine particles scattered from their origin. Ḍiʿāfan (root ḍ-ʿ-f): a cohesion not yet made firm. Khāfū (root kh-w-f): an emptiness that extends within and scatters resolve. Sadīdan (root s-d-d): what seals a gap and closes it. The verse becomes: "Let him carry an inward fear who, were he to go and leave behind him young ones not yet grown strong, would have fear for them extend through him; let him take from this a guard before Allah, and speak a word that seals the breach for the weak."
A reading that hears in the verse an imagined fear for one's own young becoming the measure of speech about the young of others.
The two readings do not conflict. The first identifies the setting and those addressed; the second hears, in the roots, an inward fear, an emptiness, and a word that seals. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Khashya (kh-sh-y) is a penetration that breaks through into the inside and then spreads within it; khawf (kh-w-f) is an emptiness that extends through its bearer and loosens his hold on himself; khalf (kh-l-f) is a side left empty after one who departs; dhurriyya (dh-r-r) is fine particles scattered from their origin; ḍiʿāf (ḍ-ʿ-f) is a cohesion in which a split has opened; sadīd (s-d-d) is the sealing of a gap until it is closed. The letters draw an emptiness in three places, an emptiness the one who goes leaves behind, an emptiness that extends through the one who fears, and a split in the cohesion of the young, and then close on a word that seals the gap.
Second: the scene
A person is asked to imagine his own departure: behind him, young ones not yet grown strong, and around them people who divide the property, keep it and speak about their affairs. He feels fear for them before anything has happened. Then the scene turns over: the young ones before him now, in property he keeps or a division he attends, are the offspring of another who went and left them behind. The fear he felt for his own young is now asked of him as inward fear on behalf of the young of others, together with a word that hits the mark, spoken about them.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
Whenever someone takes charge of weak ones who are not his own, as guardian, trustee, adviser or ruler, the nearest thing to govern what he does is to put his own young in their place and ask himself what he would have hoped for them from whoever took charge of them after him. The pattern recurs from the other side as well: when this imagining is absent, the property of the weak in the hand of the one in charge of it becomes property with no owner to defend it, and the excess and haste forbidden in the verse on testing multiply in it. The verse draws on the strongest fear a human being carries by nature, fear for his own young, and makes it the measure of justice toward the young of others.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
What the verse does may parallel what social psychology studies under the name of "perspective-taking": research, including the work of C. Daniel Batson, indicates that directing a person to imagine what another is going through, or what he himself would go through in the other's place, raises his concern for that other and increases his readiness to help him. The verse takes a nearer road to the same end: it asks the one addressed to imagine his own young in the orphan's place, and so rouses a feeling already present in him, which may perhaps weigh more than imagining a stranger alone.
This imagining may perhaps meet what the philosopher John Rawls called the "veil of ignorance" in A Theory of Justice (1971): that the rules of justice be chosen as though the one choosing did not know where he himself would fall under them, so that he provides for the weakest positions. The difference between the two is plain: Rawls's veil hides a person's position from him, while the verse uncovers for him what he holds dearest, his offspring, and places it in the weakest position. The two roads may end at a single goal: that a person judge the weak as one who might himself, or his own, be in their place.
