﴾ Have you not seen those who were given a share of the Book? They give their trust to al-jibt and al-ṭāghūt, and they say of those who have covered over: these are better guided as to the way than those who have given trust. ﴿
The verse opens with the question that opened the forty-fourth verse, every letter of it: ﴿أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا نَصِيبًا مِّنَ الْكِتَابِ﴾, "have you not seen those who were given a share of the Book?" A-lam is a question that asks the one addressed to acknowledge what he has seen, and seeing, when it is carried by ilā ("toward"), becomes a gaze turned toward a thing until it falls on it; the one addressed is a single person. Those looked at are then identified by what they were given. Ūtū, "were given", affirms the giving and folds the giver into the form of the verb, and what was given is "a share" (naṣīban), indefinite, "of the Book".
Naṣīb is from n-ṣ-b, the word the Surah used for the portions of heirs in its seventh verse: ﴿لِّلرِّجَالِ نَصِيبٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ الْوَالِدَانِ وَالْأَقْرَبُونَ﴾, "men have a share of what the two parents and the nearest kin leave". It is a portion set up for its holder and set apart for him from a whole larger than itself. The same word falls here on the Book: what is in their hands is a share of it, and min, "of", makes the Book wider than what came to them. This description, in these very words, stands in three verses of the Book: one in Āl ʿImrān, the forty-fourth of this Surah, and this one.
The verb that follows the description is from ʾ-m-n: īmān is placing one's safety in something so as to rest in it and lean on it, and the bāʾ ties this trust to what it hangs on. The same verb with its bāʾ came in the call to those given the Book in the forty-seventh verse, ﴿آمِنُوا بِمَا نَزَّلْنَا﴾, "give trust to what We have sent down"; here it comes as a report about the holders of the share, and it falls on "al-jibt and al-ṭāghūt".
In al-Baqara the ṭāghūt is joined to this verb and to its opposite in a single sentence: ﴿فَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِالطَّاغُوتِ وَيُؤْمِن بِاللَّهِ فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَىٰ﴾, "whoever covers over the ṭāghūt and gives trust to Allah has taken hold of the firmest handhold", so the covering there falls on the ṭāghūt and the trust falls on Allah. In this verse the ṭāghūt has become the place of trust, and those who covered over have become, in their words, the ones praised; the two sides set in order there have been turned over.
Al-jibt is a noun that occurs in the Book only here, and no other word from its letters occurs in it, so it is read from its letters and from its neighbour. The j is gathering and massing, the b is attaching and holding fast, the t is cutting and completion; read from its letters, then, the noun is a gathered mass clinging to its place, complete at its limit, going on to nothing.
It is paired with al-ṭāghūt, from ṭ-gh-y: ṭughyān is a thing rising above its limit until it passes over it, as in ﴿إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَى الْمَاءُ﴾, "when the water rose past its bound", and its pattern, faʿalūt, multiplies this passing over and heightens it. In the Book a masculine singular pronoun refers back to it in the sixtieth verse of this Surah, ﴿وَقَدْ أُمِرُوا أَن يَكْفُرُوا بِهِ﴾, "they had been commanded to cover it over", a plural verb in al-Baqara, ﴿أَوْلِيَاؤُهُمُ الطَّاغُوتُ يُخْرِجُونَهُم﴾, "their allies are the ṭāghūt, who bring them out", and a feminine pronoun in al-Zumar, ﴿اجْتَنَبُوا الطَّاغُوتَ أَن يَعْبُدُوهَا﴾, "who kept clear of the ṭāghūt, of serving it", so it is a noun wide enough for one and for many. Under one trust and one bāʾ, then, the verse gathers two nouns of opposite shape: a mass closed on itself and still, and an overflow that rises past its limit and does not stop there.
Their saying is then reported: "they say, of those who have covered over". The lām can carry the saying to those who covered over, and it can make it a saying about them; hāʾulāʾi, "these", points to what is near and refers to those who covered over themselves, so it sits more easily with a saying about them. Ahdā, "better guided", is on the pattern afʿal from h-d-y, and guidance is a going ahead in front of the traveller on his road; sabīlan, "as to the way", names what the comparison bears on: the road. In their words, then, those who covered over are further ahead on the road than those who gave trust.
The verse holds three verbs from the two roots: they "give trust", the side they put first "covered over", and the side they put behind "gave trust". The verb that names those they put behind on the road is the very verb by which the verse describes them, except that their trust is tied to al-jibt and al-ṭāghūt. The verse meets the forty-fourth at both its ends: each opens with the same question and each closes on the way, there ﴿وَيُرِيدُونَ أَن تَضِلُّوا السَّبِيلَ﴾, "they want you to stray from the way", and here "better guided as to the way". Across the two verses their description turns on the road: a straying wished on those addressed, and a guidance awarded to whoever covered over.
The verse opens a gaze turned toward those given a share of the Book, with the question that opened the forty-fourth verse, and a share in this Surah is a portion set up from a whole larger than itself. It then describes them by the verb of trust from ʾ-m-n, tied by the bāʾ to two nouns: al-jibt, found in this place alone and read from its letters as a gathered mass clinging to its place and complete, and al-ṭāghūt, from ṭ-gh-y, an overflow passing its limit, on a pattern that multiplies the passing. The order of al-Baqara is turned over in them, since the trust has fallen on what that verse made the object of covering. The verse reports their verdict, that those who covered over are better guided as to the way than those who gave trust, guidance from h-d-y being a going ahead of the traveller; so the verdict on going ahead on the road comes from those whose trust rests in a still thing that goes nowhere and an overflow that does not stop, and the verse closes on the way as its sister verse did.
Dans le Livre, un pronom masculin singulier y renvoie au soixantième verset de cette sourate, ﴿وَقَدْ أُمِرُوا أَن يَكْفُرُوا بِهِ﴾, « alors qu'il leur a été commandé de le recouvrir », un verbe au pluriel dans al-Baqara, ﴿أَوْلِيَاؤُهُمُ الطَّاغُوتُ يُخْرِجُونَهُم﴾, « leurs alliés sont le ṭāghūt, qui les font sortir », et un pronom féminin dans al-Zumar, ﴿اجْتَنَبُوا الطَّاغُوتَ أَن يَعْبُدُوهَا﴾, « qui se sont tenus à l'écart du ṭāghūt, de la servir » ; c'est donc un nom assez large pour un seul et pour plusieurs.
