﴾ Those who gave trust, then covered over, then gave trust, then covered over, then increased in covering over: Allah is not one to cover for them, nor to guide them on a way. ﴿
The verse opens with inna and a relative clause of five verbs, joined by thumma, "then," four times. Its first words after inna are "those who gave trust," the very words by which the previous verse called its hearers, and the road then parts at "then covered over." Thumma orders what follows after what precedes with an interval between them, so each state takes its time before the next replaces it, and the verse thereby draws a road with stages, each lasting a while before it is overturned.
The first four verbs alternate: trust, then covering, then trust, then covering. Trust, from ʾ-m-n, is a stillness that settles within and spills out as safety; covering, from k-f-r, is a cover let down over what was appearing; so each stage undoes the one before it, what was uncovered being covered again. The two verbs come here intransitive, with nothing attached to them, whereas in the previous verse they were joined by the bāʾ to a named list, "give trust to Allah …" and "whoever covers over Allah …"; here the verse describes the movement itself, going and coming back, and makes it the trait by which its people are known.
Then the alternation breaks at the fifth verb: where the rhythm awaits a third trust, there comes "then increased in covering over." Increase, from z-y-d, is something added to a space so that it packs in over what was there and settles; izdādū is on the pattern iftaʿala, from iztādū, the t turned to d after the z, and the pattern makes the increase something its people take on and that settles in them. Kufran, in the accusative, names what the increase fell in, and the Book uses the same verb for an increase in trust, "that they may increase in trust along with their trust"; the verb names an accumulation, and what follows it names what accumulates.
The words "then increased in covering over" occur in the Book only here and in the ninetieth verse of Sūrat Āl ʿImrān, "those who covered over after their trust, then increased in covering over"; there it is one covering after trust and then the increase, here two rounds of trust and covering before the increase. The verse keeps its description at the increase and ties its ruling to those who reached it; what lies beyond that is left open in its wording. The root k-f-r occurs in the verse three times, "covered over," "covered over," and kufran, so the cover let down twice as a deed that passes has become, the third time, an amount that grows, layer upon layer.
The predicate of inna is "Allah is not one to cover for them," a construction that negates kāna and sets a lām on the imperfect after it, the lām called the lām of denial (lām al-juḥūd); this negation reaches deeper than "He does not cover for them," for it denies that covering for them is in His way at all. Covering, ghafr, from gh-f-r, is a thick screen laid over a thing that keeps it safe; one says ghafara al-matāʿa fī wiʿāʾihi of one who put goods into their container and kept them. The roots k-f-r and gh-f-r meet in their last two letters and part in the first, so the verse sets a cover that they themselves laid over what was appearing against a shielding screen that Allah is not one to lay over them.
A second negation follows with lā and a second lām, "nor to guide them on a way," so each negation stands by itself. Guidance, from h-d-y, is a going ahead of the traveller that opens the road for him and carries him along it, and "a way," sabīlan, from s-b-l, is indefinite and takes in every open channel that can be travelled. Here the verse meets the close of the one before it: there "has strayed, a straying far off" for whoever covers over what the list names, here guidance to a way denied to those who went back and forth and then increased. The predicate recurs word for word, save its last word, in the hundred and sixty-eighth verse, "those who covered over and did wrong, Allah is not one to cover for them, nor to guide them on a road," and "Allah is not one to cover for them, nor to guide them" occurs in no verse other than these two.
The verse draws a road of five stages joined by "then": trust, from ʾ-m-n, then covering, from k-f-r, twice over, then an increase in covering, from z-y-d on the pattern iftaʿala, which its people take on and which settles in them, so that the alternation breaks at the fifth stage and becomes accumulation. The predicate falls on those who reached this increase: Allah is not one to cover for them, ghafr, from gh-f-r, being a shielding screen whose letters answer the cover of kufr, nor to guide them on a way, guidance, from h-d-y, being a going ahead of the traveller in an open channel, from s-b-l. The verse thus joins the straying far off with which the previous verse closed to the denial of a way, and its predicate returns word for word, save one word, in the hundred and sixty-eighth verse.
