Commentary
After forbidding the eating of wealth and the killing of selves, the prohibition reaches what comes before the deed: the wish in the self. Wishing (tamannī), from m-n-y, is a person's picturing within himself something he desires and imagining it as his, and the verb comes in the form tafaʿʿala, an effort by which a person turns the matter over in his mind and returns to it. The verse forbids a particular wishing: wishing for that in which Allah has given another more than oneself, so the wish here is bound to what is in the other's hand. The root returns in this Surah in the description of the satan and those who follow him: ﴿يَعِدُهُمْ وَيُمَنِّيهِمْ ۖ وَمَا يَعِدُهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ إِلَّا غُرُورًا﴾, "he makes them promises and fills them with wishes, and the satan promises them nothing but delusion," so wishing in the Surah is a door through which what deludes comes in.
Faḍl, from f-ḍ-l, is what goes beyond the measure and overflows it, and faḍḍala, with its doubled middle letter, is giving some more than others. The verse says "some of you over others," and the address is to all those addressed before men and women are named, so the giving of more runs between individual people in all their variety: in every "some" there is more of something than in "others." Mā, "that in which," is left open, so what is given in excess stays open to everything in which people differ, wealth, strength, standing and fortune.
Two parallel sentences follow: "men have a share of what they have acquired, and women have a share of what they have acquired." Naṣīb, "share," from n-ṣ-b, is the portion set up for its owner, standing for him like a raised marker, so each of the two sides has a portion set up in its own name. Acquiring (iktisāb), from k-s-b, is what a person gains by his striving and draws to himself, and the form iftiʿāl carries seeking and effort, so the share is taken from what its owner's own hand has made, as in ﴿أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ نَصِيبٌ مِّمَّا كَسَبُوا﴾, "those will have a share of what they earned."
Each side is given its verb in its own form: iktasabū, with the masculine plural ending, for the men, and iktasabna, with the feminine plural ending, for the women, so the women in the verse are agents who acquire by themselves, and they have from their acquiring a named share, as the men have from theirs. This parallel came earlier, in the first words on inheritance: ﴿لِّلرِّجَالِ نَصِيبٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ الْوَالِدَانِ وَالْأَقْرَبُونَ وَلِلنِّسَاءِ نَصِيبٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ الْوَالِدَانِ وَالْأَقْرَبُونَ﴾, "men have a share of what parents and nearest kin leave, and women have a share of what parents and nearest kin leave." That is a share of what others leave, this a share of what they themselves acquire, and men and women have a share through both doors.
In this way the beginning of the verse joins its middle: a person is forbidden to stretch his wish toward what is in another's hand, and then his gaze is turned back to his own share, a portion set up for him from his own striving. The verse moves the eye from the excess of the other to the acquiring of the self.
The root f-ḍ-l then returns at the end of the verse, joined to Allah: "ask Allah of His bounty." The excess that the one addressed was forbidden to wish for in another's hand is sought from its first owner. Asking, from s-ʾ-l, is a request that goes out from the one who asks and fastens on the one who holds what is needed, and min, "of," marks a part, so what is asked is a part of His bounty, and this part is taken from no one's share. The verse turns the wish bound to what is in another's hand into an asking bound to Allah alone.
The verse closes on a knowledge that takes in "every thing": what each "some" was given over "others," what each person acquired, who asks and what is given. The dividing that stirs the wish comes from a knowledge of every thing, while the one who wishes sees of the matter only what is in the other's hand.
The verse carries the prohibition back to what comes before the deed and forbids wishing, from m-n-y, when it fastens on that in which Allah has given some more than others; faḍl, from f-ḍ-l, is an excess that overflows the measure, and the giving of more runs between individual people in whatever the open mā takes in. It then sets up for men a share of what they acquired and for women a share of what they acquired, with two parallel verbs that give each side its acquiring in its own form, in the shape of what was said of their share of what parents and nearest kin leave. It then returns the root f-ḍ-l to Allah, "ask Allah of His bounty," so the wish that fastened on what is in another's hand becomes an asking that fastens on Allah and diminishes no one's share, and it closes on a knowledge that takes in the whole dividing.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read as forbidding envy, the wish that a blessing pass away from the one who has it, and it is distinguished from the permitted wish to have the like of what another has. It is related as the occasion of the verse that some women wished for what men had of fighting and inheritance, or that some men wished their reward in the Hereafter to be doubled as their inheritance was. "A share of what they have acquired" is taken by many as the reward for deeds, and by others as what each receives by inheritance.
A reading that names the wish envy and ties the verse to a report handed down about its occasion.
A root-reading
Tatamannaw (root m-n-y): what the self gathers within and then sends out toward a thing it desires. Faḍḍala and faḍlihi (root f-ḍ-l): an excess that overflows the measure and stands apart. Naṣīb (root n-ṣ-b): a portion set up and standing for its owner. Iktasabū, iktasabna (root k-s-b): what a person reaches out for, grasps and draws to himself. The verse becomes: "Do not send your wishes out to the excess in other people's hands; men have a standing portion of what they gained by their striving, and women have a standing portion of what they gained by theirs, and seek the excess from its owner."
A reading that hears the root f-ḍ-l at the beginning of the verse and at its end: an excess not to be wished for in another's hand, and an excess to be asked of Allah.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names the wish envy and ties it to a report handed down; the second hears, in the roots, an eye turned back from another's excess to the self's own share, and then to the bounty of Allah. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Wishing, from m-n-y, is what the self gathers within and then sends out toward a thing it desires; faḍl, from f-ḍ-l, is an excess that overflows the measure and stands apart; naṣīb, from n-ṣ-b, is a portion set up and standing for its owner; acquiring, from k-s-b, is what a person reaches out for and draws to himself; asking, from s-ʾ-l, is a request that goes out and fastens on the one who holds what is needed. The letters draw three movements: a wish going out from the self toward an excess in another's hand, then a portion set up that turns it back to what its own hand gathered, then a request that raises it to the owner of all excess.
Second: the scene
A community in which each looks at the other: one sees in his neighbor's hand more wealth than his own, another sees in the men's share what is not in hers, another sees in someone else a strength or a standing he was not given. In every eye a wish stretches toward what is in the other's hand. The verse stops the wish where it starts, then names a share for men and a share for women, each from its own acquiring, then raises all eyes toward a single quarter from which bounty is asked without jostling.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
This verse comes after the prohibition of eating wealth by what comes to nothing and of killing selves, and in this order lies a recurring pattern: what ends in taking and killing most often begins as a wish in the self that fastens on what is in another's hand. Wherever people come to measure themselves by what others have, everything that reaches one of them is reckoned as a loss to the rest, and the jostling grows over an amount taken to be fixed. The verse breaks this measuring on two sides: it returns each person to his own acquiring, and it opens above them all a door that does not grow narrow for those who ask.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
The prohibition of wishing for what is in another's hand may parallel what the American anthropologist George Foster described, in his study of peasant communities, as "the image of limited good": the belief that everything people desire, land, wealth, health and standing, exists in a fixed quantity that does not grow, so that whatever one of them gains is counted as taken from another, envy spreads and people hide what they own. Perhaps "ask Allah of His bounty" holds something that breaks this image at its root, since it sets above the amount divided among people a source that is not measured by what is in their hands.
The place of the verse, after the prohibition of eating wealth and killing selves, may perhaps meet what the French thinker René Girard proposed in his theory of "mimetic desire": that a person often desires a thing because he sees it in another's hand, and that this mutual desire leads to a rivalry that sharpens until it reaches violence within the community. If the parallel holds, the Book has set the prohibition of the wish fastened on what is in another's hand beside the prohibition of taking and killing, and has turned desire back to its owner's own share and to a bounty for which no one need jostle.
