﴾ As for those who have given trust and done the deeds that set things right, He will pay them their rewards (ujūr) in full and give them more out of His bounty (faḍl). As for those who drew back in disdain and held themselves great, He will punish them with a painful punishment, and they will not find for themselves, apart from Allah, a walī (one who stays near and takes charge) or a helper. ﴿
The verse opens with fa-ammā, "as for": ammā is a particle that sets out the parts of a whole, and the fa ties it to the gathering with which the previous verse closed, "He will gather them to Himself, all together," so a division into two parties follows the gathering, and the second ammā resumes the division in the middle of the verse. Each party is named by two acts: the first "have given trust and done the deeds that set things right," the second "drew back in disdain and held themselves great." Īmān, from ʾ-m-n, is a trust with which the inside settles and feels safe on the side of the one trusted; ʿamal, from ʿ-m-l, is an act that issues from its doer and leaves its trace attached to him; al-ṣāliḥāt, from ṣ-l-ḥ, are what has had its parts bound together until it comes out whole, so they are the deeds that set upright whatever they touch. The second party is named by the two verbs that were made a condition in the previous verse, now in the past: what was a possibility set as a condition has become a description by which a party is known.
The recompense of the first party is twofold. The first is "He will pay them their rewards in full": tawfiya, paying in full, from w-f-y, is an enclosing that takes in a thing to its end, and waffā, on the pattern faʿʿala, gives a thing whole, with nothing missing from it. Ajr, from ʾ-j-r, is a due that gathers on work and then runs to its owner, and its attachment to their pronoun, "their rewards," makes it what their deeds have earned. The second is "and give them more out of His bounty": ziyāda, increase, from z-y-d, is what is added on top of what was there and counted with it, and faḍl, from f-ḍ-l, is what overflows the measure, comes out of it and stands apart. The two attachments face each other: the rewards are attached to them, the bounty to the pronoun of Allah; what they are due they are given in full, and what is beyond it comes from His bounty.
In this passage, in the hundred and fifty-second verse, a promise was made to those who gave trust to Allah and His messengers and did not separate between any of them: ﴿أُولَٰئِكَ سَوْفَ يُؤْتِيهِمْ أُجُورَهُمْ﴾, "those, He will give them their rewards"; here the reward comes paid in full, with the increase beside it. "He will pay them their rewards in full" occurs in the Book only here and in Āl ʿImrān, in a division that follows a call to Jesus: ﴿وَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ فَيُوَفِّيهِمْ أُجُورَهُمْ﴾, "as for those who have given trust and done the deeds that set things right, He will pay them their rewards in full." There, those who covered over and their punishment come first; here, those who gave trust come first, and this verse adds "and give them more out of His bounty." The two promises come together in Fāṭir: ﴿لِيُوَفِّيَهُمْ أُجُورَهُمْ وَيَزِيدَهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِ﴾, "that He may pay them their rewards in full and give them more out of His bounty."
The recompense of the second party is "He will punish them with a painful punishment." ʿAdhāb, punishment, from ʿ-dh-b, is a grip from which something that hurts goes out and is then held upon its bearer; the verb and its verbal noun come together, yuʿadhdhibuhum ʿadhāban, so the punishment is named first as an act and then as a noun, and it is then described as alīman, "painful," from ʾ-l-m, a sharp impact that clings to the senses and does not leave them. The verb is set upon the pronoun of Allah, as "He will pay them in full" and "give them more" were in the first half, so the doer in the two recompenses is one: the One who gives the reward and the bounty is the One who punishes.
Then "and they will not find for themselves, apart from Allah, a walī or a helper." Wijdān, finding, from w-j-d, is a meeting that closes round what is sought and holds on it; what is denied here is that they should meet anyone who is for them apart from Allah. The walī, from w-l-y, is one who joins another and comes next to him with no gap; the naṣīr, helper, from n-ṣ-r, is one who stands firm with the one he aids in the face of what confronts him. Those who put themselves away from the serving from which neither the Messiah nor the angels brought near will ever draw back end in a state where they find no one next to them and no one standing with them. The whole phrase came in this Surah in the singular, in the hundred and twenty-third verse, of what is paid back to whoever does something bad, and it comes here in the plural.
After the gathering the verse sets out two parties and names each by two acts: those who gave trust, from ʾ-m-n, and did the deeds that set things right; and those who drew back in disdain and held themselves great, the two verbs made a condition in the verse before, now become a description in the past. To the first go their rewards paid in full, from w-f-y, a due running to them on their work, from ʾ-j-r, and with it an increase, from z-y-d, added to it out of His bounty, from f-ḍ-l: the reward is attached to them and the bounty to Him. To the others goes a punishment, from ʿ-dh-b, held upon them in pain, and they meet, apart from Allah, no walī, from w-l-y, to come next to them, and no helper to stand with them. Those who put themselves away from serving end in a state where no one apart from Allah comes next to them.
