Commentary
The verse comes after the verse on intercession, and both concern what passes between people: there, an intercession by which a person joins himself to another's matter; here, a greeting with which he meets his companion. Idhā, "when," with the verb ḥuyyītum, "you are greeted," sets the ruling for every time this happens, so it is a condition renewed as often as a greeting is. The verb is in the passive, which leaves the one who greets unnamed: anyone who greets those addressed first comes within the verse, and "a greeting," being indefinite, takes in all its forms.
Taḥiyya, greeting, is from ḥ-y-y. It began as a man's saying to his companion ḥayyāka llāh, "may Allah keep you alive," and then became the name of whatever is offered on meeting. The word thus carries in its root a life that passes out pure and runs on, as though the one who greets sent his companion something of life when he meets him. The Book names the greeting of a people in the Garden as peace, "their greeting there is peace," so taḥiyya is the name of the act and salām one of its forms. The root runs three times in the first half of the verse, ḥuyyītum, bi-taḥiyyatin and fa-ḥayyū, so the greeting comes and goes back in a single word.
The answer to "when" is a command with two faces joined by "or": to greet the one who greeted "with one better than it," or to return his greeting to him. Aḥsan, "better," is from ḥ-s-n; the root came in the previous verse describing intercession, "a good intercession," and it comes here on the pattern afʿal, so what is asked is a greeting that exceeds the first in goodness, and minhā, "than it," makes the first the measure of the second. The verse leaves open the manner of this excess: it may lie in the words, or in cheerfulness and warmth of reception; the standard it names is that the second be better than the first.
Ruddūhā, "return it," is from r-d-d, bringing a thing back to the quarter it came from, and the pronoun refers to the greeting itself, so it goes back to its owner in its own form. The better is named before the return: the first thing the verse mentions is the excess, and the last is the least by which one may answer. The two faces agree in this, that the greeting goes back to the one who offered it, either increased or as it came.
The verse closes on ḥasīb, from ḥ-s-b: reckoning is a count that tallies a thing and assigns it to its owner, and the ḥasīb is the one who tallies this and keeps charge of it. "Over every thing" brings into this tally what seems too small to be counted: a word said at a meeting, and a word said back to it. Kāna fixes the attribute as standing, unbounded by any time. Allah was described as ḥasīb in the sixth verse of this Surah, over the handing of orphans' property to them, "Allah suffices as a reckoner"; the attribute that stood there over property stands here over a word.
The previous verse closed in the same manner, "Allah has ever been a keeper (muqīt) over every thing," and neither "over every thing a keeper" nor "over every thing a reckoner" occurs anywhere but in these two verses, so the two neighbouring verses close what passes between people, intercession and greeting, with two attributes of Allah that stand over every thing. They lie in a passage about fighting: in the eighty-fourth verse, "fight in the way of Allah," and in the ninetieth, a condition that ties the ruling to their having "cast to you the peace"; between them the ruling on the greeting offered to those addressed is set down, so whatever greeting reaches them, its answer is due.
The verse sets down the ruling on the greeting after the ruling on intercession and makes it a condition renewed whenever those addressed are greeted, by anyone at all. Taḥiyya, from ḥ-y-y, is a life that passes from the one who greets to his companion, and its answer has two bounds: "with one better than it," from ḥ-s-n, an increase measured against the first, whose manner stays open, and "return it," from r-d-d, a bringing back of the greeting to its owner as it came; the two bounds agree that it goes back. The verse then closes on a reckoner, from ḥ-s-b, who tallies every thing down to the word said at a meeting, a close that sits beside the close of the previous verse, "over every thing a keeper," in the middle of a passage that commands fighting and speaks of those who cast the peace.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read about returning the greeting of peace: when someone says "Peace be upon you," the better reply adds "and the mercy of Allah and His blessings," and a reply in kind is the least that suffices; beginning with the greeting is held to be recommended and returning it obligatory. Opinions differ over the greeting of one who is not a Muslim: some keep "with one better than it" for Muslims and "return it" for others. Ḥasīb is taken to mean the One who reckons for all of this and requites it.
A reading that takes the greeting as the familiar greeting of peace, and draws from the verse the rulings on returning it.
A root-reading
Taḥiyya (root ḥ-y-y): a life that passes out pure and runs on, which the one who greets offers to his companion. Aḥsan (root ḥ-s-n): what comes out pure and falls gently within the self, on a pattern by which one thing exceeds another. Ruddūhā (root r-d-d): bringing a thing back to the quarter it came from. Ḥasīb (root ḥ-s-b): a fine tally that assigns every part to its owner. The verse becomes: "When anyone sends you a wish of life, send him a better one, or give it back to him as it came, for Allah tallies every thing, even this."
A reading that hears in the greeting a life offered, in its answer an upper bound and a lower one, and in its close a reckoning that reaches the smallest word.
The two readings do not conflict. The first details the rulings on returning the greeting of peace; the second hears, in the roots, a life offered that comes back as it was or better. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Taḥiyya (ḥ-y-y) is a pure passing that stretches out and runs on, so it is a life offered at a meeting; aḥsan (ḥ-s-n) is something pure that falls gently within the self, on a pattern by which one thing exceeds another; radd (r-d-d) is something moving that is stopped and then pushed back to where it came from; ḥasīb (ḥ-s-b) is a fine tally that assigns every part to its owner. The letters draw a circle: a life goes out from one to another, then comes back from him increased or as it went out, and the tally stands over the going and the return.
Second: the scene
Two people meet, and one of them begins with a word by which he sends his companion life; the one who begins is unnamed in the verse and may be anyone. The view then turns to the one who receives: before him lie adding more or giving it back, and over the two of them stands a reckoner who tallies what was said and what was returned. The scene is hemmed in on both sides by verses on fighting, a small meeting between two people in a time when hosts face one another.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
In every community the greeting is the first thing exchanged and the least costly, and yet the whole stance can be read in it: a greeting left unanswered is taken as a cutting off or as enmity, and one returned with something better opens a door to what follows. The pattern the verse fixes is that the smallest exchange between people carries the weight of the whole relation, which is why it has been given a lower bound, an upper bound and a reckoning that takes it in. It recurs in times of strife that a greeting is the first sign of peaceable intent, and much of what comes after hangs on its answer.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
The shape of the verse may parallel what the French sociologist Marcel Mauss described in his Essai sur le don (1925). Drawing on ethnographic reports from societies in Polynesia, Melanesia and northwest America, he gathered three linked obligations, to give, to receive and to return, and he described in some of them, as in the potlatch of northwest America, a return that ought to exceed what was received. The verse begins from the first gift, "you are greeted," makes the return the lower bound and puts the increase, "with one better than it," before it; perhaps there is in this something like what Mauss described, with a plain difference: the increase here is an increase in goodness, whereas the rivalry he described in the potlatch was a rivalry in wealth and rank.
Emanuel Schegloff and Harvey Sacks's paper "Opening up Closings" (1973) counts a greeting and its return as an "adjacency pair," and Schegloff had earlier described, in his study of conversational openings (1968), what he called "conditional relevance": the first part makes the second expected, so that when it does not come its absence is heard as a lack rather than as a passing silence. The linguistic anthropologist Alessandro Duranti, in his study of the properties of greetings (1997), starting from Samoan greetings and comparing them with others, proposed that one feature of greetings across languages is that they identify the one addressed as a distinct being worth recognizing. The observation that many greetings in many languages are wishes of life or health, like the Latin salve, "be well," may perhaps meet the origin of taḥiyya in ḥayyāka llāh.
