﴾ And do not stretch out your two eyes toward what We have given as passing use to kinds among them, the blossom of the nearer life, that We may test them inside it. And the provision of your Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer) is better and longer lasting. ﴿
A prohibition made firm by a heavy ending. What is forbidden is an act done with an organ, not a thing that is owned, nor a thing that is sought.
"Stretch out" is from m-d-d: an unbroken extending, the lengthening of what has begun together with the fixing of it. So a stretching is the drawing out of a thing already standing, not the beginning of a thing.
That is the precision of the word: an eye falls on what is in front of it without choosing, and the stretching is the lengthening of what has fallen. What is forbidden is the drawing out of what was seen, not the seeing.
"Your two eyes" is a dual annexed to him. The root ʿ-y-n denotes a place fused with the inside of a thing, out of which what is within comes forth and stretches to the surface, and it is the word for the eye that sees and for the spring that rises. So what is stretched in this verse rises from an inside and is turned toward an outside.
The preposition is one of arriving at an end. So the eye is sent out and reaches what it reaches, and what is forbidden is the sending.
The doer is the plural of majesty. What fell to them has its doer stated openly, so it is not said that they took it for themselves.
"Given as passing use" is from m-t-ʿ: a grip on what is benefited from, in a stretch that is cut off when it is complete. So this benefit, in its own material, is an enjoyment that is cut off when it is complete.
So the thing looked at is named by a name that carries its ending inside its root.
"Kinds" is indefinite, from z-w-j: two sides knotted so that they are counted as one. These are coupled sorts, and neither what they are nor how many they are is stated.
The particle over them is partitive, some and not all, and the pronoun in "them" has no named antecedent in the verse. So who the people are is not known, nor which sort among them was given.
A substitution then names the thing looked at, which had been left unnamed. "The blossom" is from z-h-r: a thin brightness that comes out and then dies down.
In a plant it is what comes before the fruit and is the quickest of it to fall, the most coloured of its parts and the least lasting: what draws the eye is the very thing that wilts.
It is annexed to "the nearer life": ḥ-y-y, a standing that runs inside a held interior and so keeps on, and d-n-w, a nearness fixed and staying within its bounds. So the thing described is a near life, and what is named of it is its blossom, not its fruit, nor its root.
The verse does not say that it passes away; it says its name, and the name says it.
A purpose particle follows, and it goes back to the giving: so the giving of passing use has an end in view of its own.
The root f-t-n denotes a slit by which a thing's casing is broken, so that what is in its belly slips loose and is sent out; from it comes the putting of metal into fire so that what is in it appears. So a testing is a bringing out, not a destroying.
"Inside it" is a word of place. The verse says "inside it," not "by it," which would make it an instrument: the test falls within the gift itself. They are set in the belly of what they were given, and what comes out of them is watched.
So the thing toward which an eye is stretched is itself the place in which its holders are being tested.
"Provision" is from r-z-q: a successive running that is cut off and released in a fixed measure. So it is a channel that recurs, not a heap set down once.
It stands in contrast with "given as passing use": that one is a grip on what is benefited from, in a stretch that is cut off when it is complete, and this one is a running that returns by measure. The first has a bottom; the second has a bed.
Then comes the predicate: "better and longer lasting." These two words, in this order, have already been said in this sūra. They were said by people who had been promised the cutting of their hands and their feet and their binding up, and who answered the one who threatened them with "and Allah is better and longer lasting."
Those same two words are now placed in the hand of an addressee who is being forbidden to stretch out his eye. The saying that was said under a threat is handed over as a cure to one who did not say it.
The subject differs, the Name there and "the provision of your Rabb" here; that much is said, and nothing is added to it.
What the threatened man said in order to stand is said to the untroubled man so that he will not stretch out his eye.
A prohibition with a heavy ending falls upon the motion of an organ, not upon a thing that is owned. "Stretch out," from m-d-d, is an unbroken extending that lengthens what has begun and fixes it, so what is forbidden is the drawing out of what has fallen and not the falling of it; "your two eyes" is a dual, from ʿ-y-n, a place fused with the inside out of which what is within comes forth; and the preposition is one of arriving at an end: an eye sent out that reaches. Then comes the thing looked at: "given as passing use," from m-t-ʿ, a grip on what is benefited from, in a stretch that is cut off when it is complete, so the gift is named by a name that carries its ending; the doer is the plural of majesty, stated openly; "kinds" is indefinite, from z-w-j, two sides knotted so that they are counted as one; and "among them" is partitive, its pronoun without a named antecedent. A substitution then names it: "blossom," from z-h-r, a thin brightness that comes out and then dies down, in a plant the most coloured part of it and the least lasting, annexed to a near life. A purpose particle follows, going back to the giving itself, with "that We may test them," from f-t-n, a slit by which a thing's casing is broken, so that what is in its belly slips loose and is sent out, and "inside it," a word of place rather than a particle of instrument: they are set within the gift and what comes out of them is watched. Then "provision," from r-z-q, a successive running cut off and released by measure, a bed that returns, set against a passing use that runs dry. Its predicate is two words said in this sūra by people threatened with cutting and binding, now in the hand of one who is forbidden to stretch out his eye, and the subject alone is what differs. What was said under a threat, so that the one saying it might stand, is now said to another so that his eye will not travel.
