﴾ Do not marry polytheistic women (mushrikāt) until they believe; a believing slave-woman is better than a polytheist woman, even if she impresses you. And do not marry [your women] to polytheistic men until they believe; a believing slave is better than a polytheist man, even if he impresses you. Those invite to the Fire, and Allah invites to the Garden and forgiveness by His permission, and He makes clear His signs to the people that they may remember. ﴿
The legislative setting: whoever enters the house settles its direction
The reading starts from where the verse sits inside the sura. It came in the course of the rulings of the household, of spending, and of the orphan. And it is to be noticed that the text, having settled the affairs of wealth and of the orphan in the verse before it, moved to a matter lying deeper still: the making of the household itself. Whoever enters the house as a husband or as a wife carries his direction in with him, and that direction becomes the reference from which upbringing and guidance are taken.
And the certain thing is that the ruling here is no sorting by race and no sorting by class. It is a guarding of the family structure against being founded upon a multiplicity of directions inside it. And for that the text named the two sides together, the man and the woman, with no preference of sex inside the ruling.
n-k-ḥ: the contract that builds a new structure
The move is to the first root. N-k-ḥ, in its origin, is not the joining of bodies alone, but the contract upon which that joining stands. One says nakaḥa of a man who has married by a recognized contract that founds a house. And for that the verb came in the verse in two forms: lā tankiḥū, "do not marry," for the man who contracts for himself, and lā tunkiḥū, "do not give in marriage," for the one who has charge of a woman and contracts on her behalf.
And it becomes clear that the choosing of this root in the station of prohibition is intended. The text is not speaking of a passing encounter, but of a contract that builds. What is forbidden is the founding of a house upon a rupture of direction, because a house is a structure that lives upon an unspoken agreement about where it faces, and such an agreement cannot be born out of a contradiction laid down at the origin.
sh-r-k: a multiplicity of directions inside one house
And the certain thing is that sh-r-k, in its origin, does not say the serving of idols alone, but the sharing of one party with another in a place that will not take a partner. One says sharika when a third party has been brought into a bond between two that was exclusive. And when this root is used in the register of religion, it means the bringing of something other than Allah into the place from which a life is directed.
And it is to be noticed that this definition reaches further than what is understood today. The one who associates is not only the one who serves a carved image; he is whoever has parcelled out the reference of his life between Allah and something else: a wealth, a standing, a craving, a doctrine. So whoever married a partner who is a believer by name and an associator by structure is not kept safe by a religious label: his house will be a field of many directions.
ʾ-m-n: the direction that carries a shared trust
The move is to the other side of the pairing. Belief, in ʾ-m-n, is an entrusting acceptance of a reference. And the believer, inside the structure of this verse, is not the carrier of a creed only; he is the carrier of one single reference that is trusted.
And it becomes clear that the married house stands in need of a shared security of reference. The great decisions in the life of a family, the raising of children, the choosing of company, the manner of earning, the bearing of crises, are built upon this reference. And a divergence of reference is not a diversity that enriches; it is a fissure that confuses the decision.
ʾ-m-w with ʿ-b-d: the overturning of the social scale
And the certain thing is that the verse makes here a rare legislative moment: "a believing slave-woman is better than a polytheist woman, even if she impresses you." ʾ-M-w is the root of ama, the woman who is owned, and ʿ-b-d the root of ʿabd, the man who is owned. The naming of these two conditions in this exact place carries very far.
And it is to be noticed that the text does not say that the believing bondwoman is the equal of the free associating woman in social standing; it says that she is "better" in the station of marriage. This is a deliberate overturning of the social ladder as it stands: freedom, rank, beauty and wealth all become lower than one single truth, the oneness of direction.
ʿ-j-b: admiration as the opening for the structural danger
And it becomes clear that the repeating of "even if she impresses you" and "even if he impresses you" is intended. ʿ-J-b, in its origin, is the astonishment at what stands out from the familiar. And admiration, inside the course of marriage, is the movement of the self that puts the surface, beauty, standing, culture, wealth, ahead of the structure, direction, reference, horizon.
And the certain thing is that the verse does not attack admiration in itself; it sets it under the ceiling of direction. Admiration is right when it serves the choice made upon the structure, and wrong when it leaps over it. From here comes the repetition, because admiration is the point of breach that disables the judgement.
d-ʿ-w with n-w-r and j-n-n: two houses, each calling toward its own side
The move is to the closing pairing: "Those invite to the Fire, and Allah invites to the Garden." D-ʿ-w, in its origin, is the call, the summoning of the one addressed toward a direction. And n-w-r, in "the Fire," though on its face it says kindling, is in the experience of every day the sign of what consumes the self rather than what builds it. And j-n-n, in "the Garden," says covering, enfolding and growing.
And it is to be noticed that the verse does not describe the one who associates as morally bad; it describes him as calling toward a pattern that produces the self-consuming of the house, while Allah calls toward a pattern that produces enfolding and growth. The pairing is not between a reward and a punishment; it is between two structures of living.
gh-f-r with dh-k-r: a seal that calls upon memory, not upon fear
And the certain thing is that the verse sealed with "and He makes clear His signs to the people that they may remember." Dh-K-r is not mere thinking, but the drawing back of what had been present in awareness and was then forgotten. So the verse takes it that this structural meaning of marriage is known by the first constitution, and yet stands in need of a reminder.
And it becomes clear that the naming of "forgiveness" at the seal of the verse is a mercy toward whoever has missed the choice. Allah calls to the Garden and to forgiveness together, that is, He calls toward a household set upright, and toward a covering laid over the earlier mistakes in this matter, for whoever has wanted to come back to the soundness of the measure.
Word precedes terminology, and role precedes identity. The one who associates is the name of a role, the carrier of a parcelled reference, and not the name of one historical group alone; the marriage contract is the name of a contract that founds the structure of a whole household; admiration is the name of the surface movement that disables the judgement passed upon the structure; inviting to the Fire is the name of a pattern of living that consumes the self, and inviting to the Garden the name of a pattern that enfolds and makes grow. So the verse overturns the inherited scale of values and returns it to the reference of direction, and it teaches the believer to measure what is better not by what impresses him, but by what enfolds and makes grow.
Result
The verse does not set down a list of religions; it fixes the measure of the choosing: the shared reference of the household. It came after the affairs of wealth and of the orphan so as to move to what lies deeper than these, the making of the household itself. The root n-k-ḥ, in its two forms, "do not marry" and "do not give in marriage," takes in both the man who contracts for himself and the guardian who contracts for the woman in his charge, because marrying is the building of a whole house and not a mere encounter. And the root sh-r-k, in "polytheistic women" and "polytheistic men," is not a sorting into sects; it is the name of a position in the structure: the bringing of a party into a place that will not take a partner, the place from which a life is directed. And the root ʾ-m-n, in "until they believe," is set facing it: the shared trust of reference, the one that makes the great decisions, upbringing and company and earning and the facing of crises, issue from a single reference. Then the text works a rare social overturning through the roots ʾ-m-w and ʿ-b-d: ﴿وَلَأَمَةٌ مُّؤْمِنَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِّن مُّشْرِكَةٍ وَلَوْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ﴾, "a believing slave-woman is better than a polytheist woman, even if she impresses you," for freedom and rank and beauty all draw back before the oneness of the reference-direction. And the root ʿ-j-b, in "even if she impresses you" and "even if he impresses you," names the point of breach: the sudden astonishment that puts the surface before the structure; and the verse does not refuse admiration in itself, it sets it under the ceiling of direction. And it seals with a pairing drawn from the roots d-ʿ-w and j-n-n: ﴿أُولَٰئِكَ يَدْعُونَ إِلَى النَّارِ وَاللَّهُ يَدْعُو إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ وَالْمَغْفِرَةِ﴾, "those invite to the Fire, and Allah invites to the Garden and forgiveness," for the Fire is a pattern of living that consumes the self, and the Garden a structure that shelters and makes grow. And the root gh-f-r, in "forgiveness," opens a door for whoever has missed the choice, and the root dh-k-r, in "that they may remember," establishes that this structural meaning of marriage is known by the first constitution, even if it stands in need of a reminder.
