﴾ Of those who hādū (returned): people who move words away from their places and say: 'We have heard, and we disobey', and 'Hear, without being made to hear', and 'Rāʿinā (keep us in your care)', twisting with their tongues and thrusting at the dīn. Had they said: 'We have heard, and we obey', and 'Hear', and 'Unẓurnā (look to us)', it would have been better for them and more upright. But Allah has put them at a distance for their covering, so they do not give trust, except a little (a few of them, or a small trust). ﴿
The verse opens with min, "of", so those described after it are named as being "of those who hādū". How this opening attaches to what precedes is open in two ways: it may be joined to the two previous verses and make plain which group the people shown in them belong to, or it may be a new sentence in which a described party is folded away and understood from the context, that is, of those who hādū are people who move words, and there min takes a part out of a group.
The name is a past verb in a relative clause, "those who hādū", so they are known by something they did. The root h-w-d has two essential letters, h and d, and the w between them is a stretch that joins the start of the event to its end: a quiet coming back to a place where one settles. The Book has ﴿إِنَّا هُدْنَا إِلَيْكَ﴾, "we have turned back to You". The name carries a return to Allah, and what the verse then describes of those it names is a moving of speech away from its places, so the verse holds a return in the name and a swerving in the deed.
The first thing they are described by is "they move words away from their places". Taḥrīf is from ḥ-r-f, and a ḥarf is the edge and rim of a thing, so taḥrīf is moving a thing from its middle to an edge; the Book says of one who stands on a rim where he does not settle, ﴿وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَعْبُدُ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ حَرْفٍ﴾, "among people is one who serves Allah on an edge". What the moving falls on is al-kalim, "words", and "away from their places" describes the act as a displacement: a mawḍiʿ, from w-ḍ-ʿ, is a place where a thing is set down and rests. A word in the verse has a place where it does its work, and the act takes it from there to an edge where it does other work; its coming in the imperfect makes the displacing a standing practice.
The phrase "they move words" comes in two other places in the Book: once in the same words, ﴿يُحَرِّفُونَ الْكَلِمَ عَن مَّوَاضِعِهِ﴾, and once as ﴿يُحَرِّفُونَ الْكَلِمَ مِن بَعْدِ مَوَاضِعِهِ﴾, "they move words after they have been set in their places". The verse then joins to the description, with wa, what they say, "and they say"; the sayings that follow can be read as examples of the displacing it has named, or as a second deed joined to it, and the wording bears both.
The examples are three, each beginning with a word of attention and bending at its end. The first is "we have heard, and we disobey": they admit the hearing, then join to it the opposite of what it calls for, so the word with which a covenant begins is closed with refusal; the same pair comes in the Book, in the same words, as the answer to ﴿خُذُوا مَا آتَيْنَاكُم بِقُوَّةٍ وَاسْمَعُوا﴾, "take what We have given you with strength, and hear". The second is "hear, without being made to hear": a command to hear followed by a qualifier. Musmaʿ is the passive participle of asmaʿa, one who is made to hear, so the phrase opens onto two directions: hear, not made to hear what would displease you, and hear, not made to hear at all. The words carry both faces at once, and leave the speaker to mean either.
The third is rāʿinā, from r-ʿ-y: tending is a keeping that holds what it tends and follows it on its way, and rāʿinā asks that the one asking be kept in the sight of the one addressed and followed with attention. The Book told those who have given trust to leave this word and put another in its place, ﴿لَا تَقُولُوا رَاعِنَا وَقُولُوا انظُرْنَا﴾, "do not say rāʿinā, say unẓurnā", and this verse shows the word in the mouths of people who bend it. The two verses answer each other: a word sound in its meaning, whose sound can be bent in the mouth, was exchanged for a word from another root.
The two nouns layyan and ṭaʿnan then name what these sayings are. Layy, from l-w-y, is a thing wound round itself so that its direction turns, and "with their tongues" makes the tongues the instrument of the winding: the fault lies in what the tongues do to the word. The Book has the reverse of this shape, ﴿يَلْوُونَ أَلْسِنَتَهُم بِالْكِتَابِ﴾, "they twist their tongues with the Book", where the tongues are what is twisted, while here they do the twisting; in this Surah the root comes again for testimony that is bent, ﴿وَإِن تَلْوُوا أَوْ تُعْرِضُوا﴾, "if you twist or turn away".
Ṭaʿn, from ṭ-ʿ-n, is a pressed thrust that runs along a narrow track until it sinks into the hollow of a body, and "at the dīn" makes the dīn the body the thrust enters; the Book joins the two words in ﴿وَطَعَنُوا فِي دِينِكُمْ﴾, "they thrust at your dīn". The verse thus moves from a twist in the mouth to a thrust at the dīn: what began as a bending of the word ends as a thrust into the dīn itself.
Beside every bent phrase the verse then sets its straight form: "we have heard, and we obey" keeps the hearing and completes it with obeying; "hear" keeps the command and drops the qualifier that carried two faces; unẓurnā comes in place of rāʿinā. Unẓurnā, from n-ẓ-r, asks for a look or for a delay, and the Book uses it for waiting: ﴿انظُرُونَا نَقْتَبِسْ مِن نُّورِكُمْ﴾, "wait for us, that we may take from your light". "We have heard, and we obey" is a saying the Book places in the mouths of those who have given trust: ﴿وَقَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا﴾. The judgment on this form is "it would have been better for them and more upright", and aqwam, from q-w-m, is an elative of uprightness set against twisting: speech standing on its face against speech that is wound; of speech itself the Book says ﴿وَأَقْوَمُ قِيلًا﴾, "more upright in utterance".
Wa-lākin, "but", then turns from what could have been to what took place: "Allah has put them at a distance for their covering". Laʿn, from l-ʿ-n, is a severing that sends what is severed out of nearness into distance; the bi in bi-kufrihim gives the cause, and kufr, from k-f-r, is a covering that shuts the opening through which a thing would show, so the distance is the fruit of the covering. The fa brings the result: "so they do not give trust, except a little". "Except a little" bears two readings: the little may be a number of them who give trust, or a small measure of trust that they give, and the wording has room for both. Another verse of this Surah closes with the same words: ﴿بَلْ طَبَعَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهَا بِكُفْرِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا﴾, "rather, Allah has set a seal on them for their covering, so they do not give trust, except a little".
The verse describes people whom min relates to those who hādū, and whether this opening is joined to what precedes or begins anew is open. The group's name, from h-w-d, is a return to Allah, and the deed of those described is a moving of words away from their places; taḥrīf, from ḥ-r-f, takes a word from its place to an edge where it does other work. The verse then shows the displacing in three phrases that begin with attention and bend at their end: "we have heard" followed by disobeying, "hear" followed by a qualifier with two faces, and rāʿinā wound by the tongues, and it calls this a twisting with the tongues that ends as a thrust at the dīn. Beside each phrase it sets its straight form, judges the straight form better and more upright, and closes on a distance caused by covering, and on a trust whose smallness the wording allows to be a smallness of number or of measure.
Le Livre porte ﴿إِنَّا هُدْنَا إِلَيْكَ﴾, « nous sommes revenus vers Toi ».
