﴾ You will not be able to be even between women, even if you are eager (ḥaraṣtum); so do not incline all the way (kulla al-mayl), leaving her like one suspended (al-muʿallaqa). If you set things right and guard yourselves, Allah has ever been covering, compassionate. ﴿
The verse begins with a report on the limit of capacity: "you will not be able" (lan tastaṭīʿū). Lan negates what is to come, and istiṭāʿa is from ṭ-w-ʿ on the pattern istafʿala; ṭawʿ is a thing's yielding to the one who wants it, so what one is able to do is what yields to its owner, so that he has power over it. What they are told will not yield to them is "to be even between women" (an taʿdilū bayna al-nisāʾ), and an with the verb has the sense of a verbal noun, that is, evenness between them. ʿAdl, from ʿ-d-l, is holding two sides at one measure until they are level, and "between women" makes it a weighing in which one is measured against another, the evenness of one who has more than one woman.
Then comes "even if you are eager" (wa-law ḥaraṣtum). Law here supposes the utmost effort that can be imagined and then leaves the report standing along with it. Ḥirṣ, from ḥ-r-ṣ, is intensity of seeking and the narrowing of the will onto a single object, so the verse grants those addressed their eagerness and tells them that evenness between women remains, even with it, beyond their capacity. On the same construction the Book has ﴿وَمَا أَكْثَرُ النَّاسِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ﴾, "most people, even if you are eager, are not ones who give trust", and in another place ﴿إِن تَحْرِصْ عَلَىٰ هُدَاهُمْ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي مَن يُضِلُّ﴾, "if you are eager for their guidance, Allah does not guide one whom He leaves astray"; eagerness in these places is a true seeking whose aim stays outside the seeker's hand.
This verse is read together with the third verse of the Surah, for the verb in both is one and the women in both are the women: there ﴿فَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا فَوَاحِدَةً﴾, "if you fear that you will not be even, then one", and here "you will not be able to be even between women, even if you are eager". The third verse speaks at the door of marriage, and its command is "marry", so it made the fear of missing evenness enough to bring the number back to one. This verse speaks of the state of one who has more than one, and its command is "do not incline all the way, leaving her", so it tells him that the evenness the eager man seeks will not yield to him, then asks of him what will yield: that he not incline all the way. The two verses say together that the fear of missing evenness brings one back to one at the door of marriage, that evenness between women does not yield even to eagerness, and that inclining all the way is forbidden. The third verse closed on nearness to "not tilting" (allā taʿūlū), and tilting is an inclining; this verse forbids the inclining by its own name.
The prohibition then comes with fa-: "so do not incline all the way" (fa-lā tamīlū kulla al-mayl). Mayl, from m-y-l, is a sliding off from the middle toward one side, and kulla al-mayl measures the verb by its verbal noun with "all" (kull) set before it, so the prohibition falls on the whole of the inclining, on its completeness. Two ends thus face each other in the verse: an evenness between women that it reports cannot be reached, and a complete inclining that it forbids, and the one addressed stands in what lies between them. In the Book the root m-y-l occurs in this Surah alone, in three verses: ﴿أَن تَمِيلُوا مَيْلًا عَظِيمًا﴾, "that you incline, a great inclining", in the twenty-seventh verse, ﴿فَيَمِيلُونَ عَلَيْكُم مَّيْلَةً وَاحِدَةً﴾, "so that they incline upon you in a single inclining", in the hundred and second, and here "all the inclining"; each time the verb comes with its verbal noun.
The outcome of the complete inclining then comes: "leaving her like one suspended" (fa-tadharūhā ka-l-muʿallaqa). Fa-tadharūhā admits two parsings: it may be in the subjunctive after the fa- of cause answering the prohibition, so that the leaving is the fruit of the inclining that was forbidden, or in the jussive, joined to tamīlū, so that the leaving is forbidden along with it. Tadharūhā is from w-dh-r, lifting the hand from a thing and leaving it in its place, and the Book uses the verb for wives left behind at death: ﴿وَيَذَرُونَ أَزْوَاجًا﴾, "leaving wives behind". The pronoun is singular: after "between women" in the plural, the speech turns to one among them, the one inclined away from, so evenness is measured between all of them, and the leaving falls on one.
Al-muʿallaqa is a passive participle of ʿallaqa, from ʿ-l-q; to hang a thing is to fasten it to what is above it so that it dangles, neither settling on ground that bears it nor coming free of what it hangs from. The ka- makes her an image to which the leaving is likened: a woman bound to what she hangs from, neither standing on her own ground nor raised up to it. The word occurs in the Book in this place alone, and elsewhere the root comes as ʿalaq and ʿalaqa in the stages of creation. The next verse names the state set against this hanging: a parting in which Allah makes each free of need from His ampleness.
A condition then comes on the pattern of the one that closed the previous verse: there "if you do what is beautiful and guard yourselves, Allah has ever been aware of what you do", and here "if you set things right and guard yourselves, Allah has ever been covering, compassionate". Setting right (iṣlāḥ) is from ṣ-l-ḥ, the root that in the previous verse named the settlement between the spouses, and here it has become an act of all those addressed, with guarding beside it in both places. The close here is on two names: ghafūr, from gh-f-r, covering being the veiling and concealing of a thing, and raḥīm, from r-ḥ-m, the root that at the opening of the Surah named the wombs. This close comes in a verse that reported at its outset what cannot be done, so the limit of capacity at its head is joined to covering and compassion at its end.
The verse reports a limit of capacity: evenness between women, ʿadl from ʿ-d-l being the holding of the sides at one measure, will not yield to those addressed, capacity from ṭ-w-ʿ being a yielding, however intense their eagerness, ḥirṣ from ḥ-r-ṣ being a seeking narrowed onto its object. It is read with the third verse: that one brings the number back to one when missing evenness is feared, and this one reports that evenness does not yield and then forbids the completeness of inclining, from m-y-l, a root that in the Book is confined to this Surah. The outcome of the complete inclining is a leaving, from w-dh-r, of one particular woman like one suspended, from ʿ-l-q, fastened to what she hangs from, neither settling nor coming free. The condition then opens to setting right and to guarding, and the close is on the Covering, the Compassionate, in a verse that began with what cannot be done.
Selon la même construction, le Livre porte ﴿وَمَا أَكْثَرُ النَّاسِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ﴾, « la plupart des gens, même si tu y tiens ardemment, ne sont pas de ceux qui donnent confiance », et en un autre endroit ﴿إِن تَحْرِصْ عَلَىٰ هُدَاهُمْ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي مَن يُضِلُّ﴾, « si tu tiens ardemment à leur guidance, Allāh ne guide pas celui qu'Il égare » ; l'ardeur, en ces endroits, est une recherche sincère dont le but reste hors de la main de celui qui cherche.
