﴾ Those who watch and wait on you (yatarabbaṣūna): if an opening (fatḥ) from Allah is yours, they say, 'Were we not with you?'; if those who cover have a share (naṣīb), they say, 'Did we not have a hold over you (nastaḥwidh), and shield you from those who give trust?' Allah will judge between you on the Day of Rising (qiyāma), and Allah will never make for those who cover a way over those who give trust. ﴿
The verse opens with the relative alladhīna, "those who," with no verb before it in the verse itself. The wording can be read as describing "the hypocrites" mentioned in the close of the previous verse, or as the start of a new statement of blame, understood as "they are those who"; on either reading the verse makes a people known by what they do. Yatarabbaṣūna is from r-b-ṣ, whose material is keeping to a place in a watchfulness held taut toward an end; one says tarabbaṣa bihi of one who waits for good or ill to befall another. The verb is on the pattern tafaʿʿala, so the waiting is a work its doer takes upon himself and bears, and it is an imperfect, which makes it a standing state that renews itself.
The bāʾ of bikum, "on you," ties this waiting to those addressed: what these people watch for is something that will befall them, and at the head of the verse the thing awaited is vague and has no name. In the ninety-eighth verse of Sūrat at-Tawba the same verb is tied to those addressed by the same bāʾ, and there its object is named: he "waits on you for the turns of fortune." Here the thing awaited comes into view in the two conditions that follow the verb: an opening that belongs to those addressed, or a share that belongs to those who cover. The verse thus divides the waiting between two outcomes, and gives each outcome a speech that is said when it comes.
The two conditions face each other in their build: "if an opening from Allah is yours," "if those who cover have a share." In, "if," with the past kāna posits something that may happen and does not report that it has happened, so the verse describes a practice that recurs whenever one of the two outcomes comes. Fatḥ, "opening," is from f-t-ḥ, a cleft that is completed so that whoever passes goes through to what lies behind it; from it comes fataḥa al-bāb, to remove what bars the way through a door. Naṣīb, "share," is from n-ṣ-b, a portion set up for its owner and bound to him.
It is the verse that names the two outcomes, before it reports what these people say. It gives those addressed an "opening" and joins it to Allah with min, "from," and it gives those who cover a "share" stripped of any mention of its source. The opening is a way through whose side is named; the share is a bounded portion set up for its holders. The verse addresses the people of the opening with lakum, "yours," and mentions the people of the share by their name, "those who cover," so those addressed stand in the place facing those who cover, the place that the same verse will name, further on, "those who give trust."
The root f-t-ḥ occurs in places in the Book as a separating that is opened between two parties, as in the eighty-ninth verse of Sūrat al-Aʿrāf: "our Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), open between us and our people with the truth." In this verse the opening is joined by the lām of lakum, "yours," and "between" is given, at the verse's end, to another verb: "Allah will judge between you." What befalls those addressed in its time is an opening for them, and the separating between the two parties is a judgment deferred to a named day.
The answer to the two conditions is two speeches built alike: "they say," then the interrogative hamza on lam, "not." A question put on a negation asks the one questioned to acknowledge what the questioner affirms, so each speech is a claim offered in the form of a question. What is claimed differs: to the people of the opening, "Were we not with you?", a claim of company that stops at "with"; to the people of the share, "Did we not have a hold over you, and shield you from those who give trust?", a claim of a hand that rises over them with ʿalā, "over," and then holds back from them a party it names. The mould is one, and what is said changes with whoever has the outcome.
Nastaḥwidh is on the pattern istafʿala from ḥ-w-dh, whose material is hard driving: one says ḥādha al-ibila of driving camels roughly, and istaḥwadha ʿalayhi of overpowering someone and taking over his affair. The verb has one other place in the Book, with the same ʿalā, in the nineteenth verse of Sūrat al-Mujādila: "the shayṭān has got a hold over them, and made them forget the remembrance of Allah." In the mouths of the speakers here the wording can bear two senses: a hand that overpowered those who cover and took over their affair, or a hand that surrounded their affair and took charge of it. On either sense they present to those who cover a hand they once had over them, and join to it the barrier: "and shield you from those who give trust." Shielding, manʿ, from m-n-ʿ, is a barrier by which a thing is gripped, so that whoever seeks it does not reach it.
The Book has one other place where the first question returns word for word: the fourteenth verse of Sūrat al-Ḥadīd, whose callers are named in the verse before it, "the day the hypocrites, men and women, will say," and then "they call out to them: were we not with you?"; the answer there acknowledges and then amends: "they say: yes, but you put yourselves to the trial, and waited." In that place, then, what meets here meets again: the claim "with you," and the root r-b-ṣ itself. Earlier in this Surah a speech was likewise measured by "with" against two outcomes, in the seventy-second and seventy-third verses: "in that I was not present with them," at a blow, and "would that I had been with them," at "a bounty from Allah."
The fāʾ then brings in the judgment: "Allah will judge between you on the Day of Rising." Judgment, ḥukm, is from ḥ-k-m, an enclosing that holds a thing on its course so that it does not leave it, and judgment between people is a separating that cuts off their dispute. "Between you" sets this separating within a mixed company, in which what was is told apart from what was claimed to have been, and "the Day of Rising," from q-w-m, gives the separating an appointed time named after the rising. The two speeches the verse has reported thus remain standing claims until that judgment falls, and the verse returns the separating between them to Allah.
The verse closes on a negation stretching into what is to come: "Allah will never make for those who cover a way over those who give trust." Lan negates what is to come; sabīlan, "a way," is indefinite under negation and so covers every road; sabīl, from s-b-l, is a channel drawn out and open that is travelled to its end; and ʿalā, "over," makes the channel a road that rises above those who give trust and reaches them from above. The sentence follows the mention of the Day of Rising in the order of speech, and lan extends the negation into what is to come with no named limit, so its reach stays open in the wording: it joins the judgment named before it, and it widens to what lies beyond.
This mould, jaʿala with a lām for the one for whom something is made and ʿalā for the one over whom, occurs in the Book in four verses, all of them in this Surah: the ninetieth, "Allah has made for you no way against them"; the ninety-first, "We have made for you a manifest authority against them"; this verse; and the hundred and forty-fourth, "to make for Allah a manifest authority against you." The way that the ninetieth verse denied to those addressed over a people who kept apart from them is denied here to those who cover over those who give trust, and the mould returns in the hundred and forty-fourth verse with "authority" in the place of "way," where the ones who make are those addressed themselves.
The verse makes known a people who watch and wait, from r-b-ṣ, on those addressed; the thing awaited stays vague at its head and comes into view in two facing conditions: an opening, from f-t-ḥ, joined to Allah and belonging to those addressed, or a share, from n-ṣ-b, belonging to those who cover. For each outcome there is a speech on the same build: "Were we not with you?" to the people of the opening, and "Did we not have a hold over you, and shield you from those who give trust?" to the people of the share, from ḥ-w-dh and m-n-ʿ, both claims in the form of a question, and the first question returns word for word in Sūrat al-Ḥadīd, joined to waiting. The verse then returns the separating between the two claims to Allah's judgment on the Day of Rising, and closes on a negation of open reach: a way, from s-b-l, that Allah will never make for those who cover over those who give trust, in a mould that occurs in the Book only in four verses of this Surah.
