❮ It is made lawful for you, on the night of the fast, to approach your spouses. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them. God knew that you were deceiving yourselves, so He turned to you and pardoned you. So now approach them and seek what God has written for you. Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn is distinguishable from the black thread of night. Then complete the fast until nightfall. Do not approach them while you are in iʿtikāf in the mosques. These are God's limits, so do not come near them. Thus God makes His signs clear for people, so that they may guard themselves. ❯
The nucleus ḥ-l is the untying of what had been drawn tight, and the lām carries the untying to its place; so lawfulness at the root is the removal of a knot that was already standing, and not a loosing out of nothing. And the passive form "it is made lawful" puts the act in the hand of the One who makes lawful and not in the hand of the one for whom it is made lawful; so permission is a divine legislating and not a human right. And the words "the night of the fast", rather than "its day", single the making lawful out by the setting of the night in particular, which discloses that the fast is confined to the daytime. And the nucleus r-f is a softness with warmth, while the thāʾ gathers into it a scattered showing; so rafath at the root is a pleasure that spreads from the speech of desire into the act, and not intercourse alone. And "ilā" in "to your spouses" conveys a goal and a path, so rafath is a motion heading toward the spouse and not an act falling upon her, which discloses the exchange in the arriving before the act.
Libās is on the pattern fiʿāl from l-b-s, and its nucleus l-b is a clinging encirclement, while the sīn gathers into it a gliding along the surface; so a garment is what encircles the body while touching it. And the figure here is deliberately turned both ways: the wife is a garment for the husband and the husband is a garment for the wife, neither one of them the stock and the other the appendage. This exchange breaks the hierarchy that made the woman a dwelling for the man, or a covering that guards him alone; rather each of the two covers the other, keeps the other, and warms the other. And the lām in "for you" and in "for them" is a lām of mutual belonging, setting each party in the other's keeping and not in the other's ownership.
The nucleus kh-w is an emptiness that runs through, and the nūn gathers into it an uncovered showing of that emptiness; so betrayal at the root is the showing of what ought to have stayed covered, or the disclosing of a gap in a trust. And the iftiʿāl pattern in "you were deceiving" conveys a laboured effort, which discloses that the act did not come from the addressed out of ignorance but out of deliberateness. And the object, "yourselves", is startling: the betrayal falls from them upon their own selves, not upon others and not upon God. Hardening a prohibition with no text is a betrayal of the self, barring it from what God had made lawful for it. And "you were", from the deficient verb, conveys the continuing of the state before the verse. Then the nucleus t-w is a continuous returning, and the bāʾ sticks the returning to its place; so turning is a return that reaches its place and holds there. And "ʿalā" in "He turned to you" conveys the Master's returning toward the addressed with pardon, and not merely His accepting their return. Then "and pardoned you": the nucleus ʿ-f is an erasing of the trace, while the wāw conveys stretching; so pardon is a continuous erasing that lifts the trace from the page, and not a mere rising above punishment. And the meeting of the turning with the pardon makes the past as though it had never been.
"God knew that you were deceiving yourselves": the knowing comes before the lightening
Before the new ruling comes down, one line comes down: "God knew that you were deceiving yourselves." It did not say "you erred", nor "you disobeyed". It said, in meaning: I saw you in the night, stealing from yourselves what I had not forbidden you.
This is a knowing that looks inward, not at the deed. God does not enter the incident in the record; He reads the human being in his inward, sees the man come back to his household and hang back, sees the woman draw aside, and sees the laboured effort in both of them. Then the fāʾ comes after it: "so He turned to you and pardoned you." The ruling did not change because the people changed; it changed because God looked into them and knew what they are.
This is other than the knowing in ﴿قَدْ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسٍ مَّشْرَبَهُمْ﴾, "every people knew their drinking place": there, marks come down upon the branches in the earth. And it is other than the teaching in ﴿وَيُعَلِّمُكُمُ الْكِتَابَ﴾, "and He teaches you the Book": there, a meaning comes to you from outside you. Here the direction is reversed: the meaning is inside you, and God comes down to it to read it. And the law turns about upon what He read.
The law is not lightened upon the human being because he is weak; it is lightened because God saw the weakness before the human being admitted it.
The fāʾ in "so now" is a fāʾ of branching, moving from the lifting of the ban to the new command. And "now" is an adverb of time bearing down upon the present moment, so it cuts the command off from a past that had been forbidden by the people themselves. And the nucleus b-sh is a spread showing, while the rāʾ renews it; so bashar is a spread and renewed surface, and from it bashara for the outer surface of the skin. And the form of "approach them" conveys a meeting of skin with skin, and it is a standard Qur'anic indirection for intercourse and not a passing technical term. Then "and seek what God has written for you": the nucleus b-gh is a request with a complete aim, and the yāʾ conveys stretching, while the iftiʿāl in "ibtaghā" adds the effort taken up by the self. So the seeking here is not bare pleasure but the seeking of what God has written: offspring, or a pleasure written before the act. And k-t-b, in its settled sense, discloses that what comes out of the approaching is measured and written, not guaranteed by the act.
"And seek what God has written for you": a preposition that turns the law over
Read it twice, and hear the difference. ﴿كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ﴾, "fasting has been written upon you". ﴿وَابْتَغُوا مَا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ﴾, "and seek what God has written for you". The root is one, the Speaker is one, and the two verses stand in the same surah. But one small particle turns over between them, and with it everything turns over.
"Written upon you" is a passive that comes down on your back. The verb keeps its agent hidden, and the particle "upon" sets the ruling as a weight coming to rest on the shoulder. So it came in ﴿كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِصَاصُ﴾, "retaliation has been written upon you", and in ﴿كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِتَالُ﴾, "fighting has been written upon you": a ruling stuck to you whether you loved it or hated it. And what it asks of you after that is always one thing: discharge it. Do what is upon you.
As for "God has written for you", the agent is plain, and the particle "for" is a lām of giving. What is written here did not come down upon you; it came down for your sake. A gift set in your page, waiting for your hand. And so what it asks of you afterward is not "discharge" but "and seek". Ask for what is yours.
The law that comes down on your back asks you to discharge it. The law that comes down into your lap asks you to seek it. One particle is the whole difference.
The figure of "the white thread of dawn" told apart from "the black thread of night" is not only a poetic picture but a sensory model of a division in time: dawn is a scene of light in which a white horizontal band shows and is told apart from the darkness above it, so the figure describes what is there and does not prettify it. And the nucleus b-y is a parting with clarity, while the nūn settles the clarity; and the tafaʿʿul form in "is distinguishable" conveys the gradualness of the showing, not a sudden appearing. And the nucleus f-j is a splitting that lets a bursting through, while the rāʾ renews it; so dawn is the splitting of the darkness by a renewed light. Then "then complete the fast until nightfall": "thumma" is for a slackening in time, and t-m-m, whose nucleus is t-m, is a compacting that closes, while the second mīm seals the closing; so completing is the shutting of the circle until no opening is left. And "until" cuts the goal off at "nightfall", an adverb that answers "the night of the fast" at the head of the verse, so the daily circle is made whole.
The nucleus ʿ-k is a penning within a place, and the fāʾ opens it onto a concentrating of the care; so iʿtikāf is a concentrated penning in a spot and in a task, and not a mere sitting. And the circumstantial clause "while you are in iʿtikāf in the mosques" ties the ban to the setting of the iʿtikāf and not to the fasting at large; the ban is local and timed, not standing. Then "these are God's limits": the demonstrative "these" is for a respected distance, and it points back to the rulings that came before. And the nucleus ḥ-d is a cutting parting, while the doubling adds force to the parting; so a limit is what parts two grounds with a parting that admits no overlap. From this comes "so do not come near them", in the form of a ban upon nearing and not upon crossing; the nucleus q-r is a holding brought close, and the bāʾ sticks together what has come close. So the ban here is not confined to overstepping the limit but reaches the coming near to it at all, so that the foot may not slip. And this hardening, which God made binding here, is other than the hardening He forbade in "you were deceiving yourselves": the first is a determined text, the second an invention of the self.
So the word precedes the term and the role precedes the identity. The one who fasts is not a title given to whoever abstains from his night as he abstains from his day, but a role that knows where the limits open and where they close, so he keeps the divider between the dawn and the night, and between the mosque and the house, and between rafath and the garment that the two spouses each hold over the other.
The verse lifts a ban that the believers had laid upon themselves with no text, and it founds a whole understanding of the fast in its bearings of time and of relation. The passive form "it is made lawful" puts the act in the hand of the One who makes lawful and not of the one for whom it is made lawful, and the root r-f-th takes in a spread of pleasure in speech and in body alike. Then the mutual figure of the garment breaks out: "They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them" breaks every hierarchy, for each of the two covers the other, encircles the other, and warms the other. And the sentence "God knew that you were deceiving yourselves" discloses that a hardening with no warrant is a betrayal, by the root kh-w-n, of the self and not of another, so there came "so He turned to you and pardoned you", a returning from the Lord with a covering together with a complete erasing. And the difference of one particle between "fasting has been written upon you" and "what God has written for you" says a great deal: the first is an obligation coming down on the shoulder, the second a gift set in the page, waiting for the hand. Then the verse sets the divider in time with exactness: eat until the dawn "is distinguishable", by the root b-y-n, gradually, and not until it is guessed at. And the iʿtikāf is a state tied to a place, by the root ʿ-k-f, hanging its ruling upon a setting and not upon a person. And the verse closes with "These are God's limits, so do not come near them": the ban is upon the nearing, and not upon the crossing alone, so that the foot may not slip.
﴿كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ﴾, « il vous est prescrit le jeûne ».
