﴾ Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east and the west, but righteousness is whoever believes in God, the last day, the angels, the book, and the prophets, and gives wealth, despite love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask, and for freeing the enslaved, and establishes the prayer, and gives the purifying share, and those who fulfill their pledges when they make them, and those who are patient in hardship, suffering, and time of conflict. Those are the ones who were truthful, and those are the aware. ﴿
The verse opens with laysa, which raises its noun and sets its predicate in the accusative, and fronting the predicate "righteousness" with the definite article gives restriction: the reality of righteousness is not bounded by that picture. The root b-r-r has its nucleus in b-r, an appearing that stretches out, and the doubled rāʾ doubles the stretch. So righteousness in the making of its root is a breadth whose extension shows and takes things in; from the same root the dry land is called barr for its breadth against the sea. Its noun, placed after, "that you turn", is an infinitival clause: the wording lifts the act into a noun of meaning, the turning of faces rather than the act of turning at one moment. The root w-l-y is nearness and facing, and turning the face is aiming it toward a side. "Toward" is a locative from q-b-l, the facing. And the east and the west are the two poles of the horizon, and naming them takes in every direction a human being can face. So the verse denies that righteousness is bounded within the turning of a face toward an earthly side, however sacred that side has grown in people's souls. And the denial is not a denial of the turning itself, it is a denial that righteousness is confined to it: righteousness is wider than one rite can hold.
"But" is a doubled particle of correction that carries the statement over to what follows the denial. The finest thing in that correction is the choice of "whoever" rather than "that": had it read "but righteousness is that one believes", righteousness would be an act performed; it reads "but righteousness is whoever believes", and righteousness became a person carrying the acts and not the act alone. "Whoever" is a general relative pointing at a self that bears the acts trailing after it. And the order of what is believed in is a deliberate ladder of connection: God, the absolute source; the last day, the destination at which everything falls into order; the angels, the means by which the will is carried through; the book, the revealed text that keeps the tie; the prophets, the bearers of that text who embody it in time. These five are graded layers running from the highest down to the nearest, and together they build the full map of a human being's connection to what surpasses him. And it does not read "the prophet" in the singular but "the prophets" in the plural: belief is not confined to one in particular, it runs along the whole chain, because concealing one of them is concealing all of them.
The root ʾ-t-y carries a coming that arrives at what was meant, not a mere handing over. So "gives wealth" means that he brought the wealth all the way to the one it is due to, not simply that he let it out of his hand. The root m-w-l has its nucleus in m-w, a gathering that flows, and wealth in the making of its root is a thing that piles up and runs between hands. And "despite love for it" is a circumstantial phrase whose pronoun can carry three references: love of God, love of the wealth, love of the giving. The strongest is the wealth, since the giving is what is under discussion, and the phrase holds both accompaniment and overcoming: he gives it along with his love for it, and in spite of his love for it. The root ḥ-b-b has its nucleus in ḥ-b, an attachment that sticks, and the doubled bāʾ doubles the sticking: love in the root is a doubled adhesion between a heart and what it loves. So giving out of love for the wealth is a giving torn away from the heart's adhesion, not a shedding of the surplus. The measure is exact: righteousness is not spending from the extra but from the loved, because the extra left the heart before it was given, while the loved leaves the heart along with the giving.
The six kinds are ordered with care, from the nearest to the furthest and then to the most general. "Relatives" are those of close descent, put as a possessive construction rather than as a single noun, because the wording gives ownership of the quality and not of the self. "Orphans" is from y-t-m, being cut off and left alone, and not merely the loss of a father: a small one whose support in upbringing has been cut off is an orphan even where a father is alive in name. "The needy" is from s-k-n, settling and stillness: the needy one is he whom need has seated until he no longer moves to ask. "The traveler" is one cut off on a journey from his own wealth, and the Arabic makes him a son of the road, a belonging that will not leave him. "Those who ask" are those whose asking has moved, so that the open showing of need has joined in them to a restraint once kept. And "for freeing the enslaved" is a singular expression built on the particle fī: not "to the necks" and not "toward the necks" but "in the necks", because freeing a neck is not the passing of money to a neck but the spending of it in the freeing itself: the neck is the place of the act and not a receiver of the gift. The order is precise: from the tie of blood, to the one cut off in childhood, to the one held down by need, to the one cut off on the road, to the one who declares his need, to the freeing of a human being from another's ownership. A circle that widens until it takes in the human being himself as a value whose freedom is bought.
The root q-w-m has its nucleus in q-w, a gathering of force that rises, and establishing is the setting of a thing on its own strength so that it stays standing. So the prayer in this Book is not performed and not done, it is established, because establishing sets it upright in its place until it holds without stooping. "Gives the purifying share" repeats the earlier verb of arrival with a second object: the purifying share is from z-k-w, a packed growth, and giving it is the bringing of a clean due all the way home, a due that releases growth in the giver and in the receiver at once. Then a fine shift of case falls: "those who fulfill" is an agent noun in the nominative after a run of past-tense verbs. The move from verb to agent noun carries a meaning: keeping faith is a settled attribute and not a passing event, a thing a person is described by and not merely a thing that issues from him. The root w-f-y has its nucleus in w-f, a completion that comes clear, and keeping faith is a full discharge that leaves no remainder. The root ʿ-h-d has its nucleus in ʿ-h, an appearing that repeats, and a pledge is a binding whose review comes round again. And the restriction "when they make them" is exact: fulfilment was not imposed at every time but at the time the pledge is made. "When" here is for what actually falls and not for a possible condition: once they pledge, it is due; and the difference between the one who fulfills and the one who breaks is that the first completes the loop after the binding, and the second cuts it after joining it.
"Those who are patient" is an agent noun in the accusative of praise, joined to "those who fulfill" across a change of case, and the break in the pattern is a signal: patience earns a case of its own. And patience is laid over three layers ordered by rising weight. "Hardship" is on the pattern faʿlāʾ from b-ʾ-s, a striking tension, and the long vowel gives extension and the taking in of a whole condition: hardship is a stretched pressure of living that covers poverty and deprivation. Then "suffering", on the same pattern from ḍ-r-r: the touching harm that reaches body and soul, sickness and pain. Then "time of conflict", the hour of engagement, where the striking tension gathers into one concentrated moment. So the pressures climb: an outward pressure that stretches, then an inward pressure that stretches, then a collective pressure concentrated. And the encompassing fī in the first two points to the believer being sunk in the pressure for a long stretch, while in the third the locative turns into a bounded time, "time of", because the hour of engagement does not last. And patience in its root ṣ-b-r is a firmness that stands out and holds on, the one quality able to carry all three layers.
The demonstrative "those" comes twice with no grammatical need for the repetition, and the repetition belongs to the rhetoric: the first seals the description, the second sets apart a second ruling that the first does not already contain. The first ruling is "the ones who were truthful": the root ṣ-d-q has its nucleus in ṣ-d, a force that drives, and the qāf seals it tight. So truthfulness in the root is a driving force that fastens the match between an inside and an outside. Its bearing here is that they made the belief they claimed true by acts that matched it, a giving and an establishing and a keeping of faith and a patience, so their word did not stay a claim but became a full correspondence. The second ruling is "those are the aware": the separating pronoun set between subject and predicate gives restriction and confinement, as if to say, they and no one else. And "the aware" is of the iftiʿāl pattern from w-q-y, and that pattern carries the taking of trouble and the spending of effort. Protection in the root w-q-y is the building of a barrier that shields, and awareness is a laboured act in which a person builds his own shield between himself and what would harm him. So the aware are those who built their protection out of the five acts just passed: awareness did not descend upon them, they earned it.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: "the righteous one" is not a title conferred on whoever has completed a single rite, it is a compound role that falls to whoever gathers the connection of belief in all its layers, the bringing of wealth out of what he loves to six ordered places, the establishing of the prayer and the giving of the purifying share, the keeping of a pledge at the hour he binds it, and patience across three layers of pressure, so that his act makes his word true and his own hand builds the shield of his protection.
The verse begins by refusing a narrow definition, "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east and the west", and then shifts righteousness, from b-r-r, a breadth whose extension shows, from an act to a person: "but righteousness is whoever believes." Righteousness set on the relative "whoever" rather than on the infinitival "that" means that it is a role a human being lives and not a deed he completes. Then three layers are laid out: belief in five graded directions of connection running from the highest to the nearest, God and the last day and the angels and the book and the prophets; then a spending "despite love for it", that is, out of the loved and not out of the surplus, to six kinds ordered from the nearest to full manumission, relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask, and the freeing of necks, together with the establishing of the prayer and the giving of the purifying share; then a keeping of the pledge and a patience in three rising layers, "in hardship", a stretched pressure of living, "suffering", a harm that touches body and soul, and "time of conflict", the concentrated moment of engagement. And the seal comes with two pointings: "Those are the ones who were truthful", the match of word to act, and "those are the aware", with the separating pronoun for restriction and the iftiʿāl of w-q-y for the labour of building the shield.
